VRIES VREDEMAN or JAN DE

Vries Vredeman or Jan de
(1527-1604 or 1623)
Nationality: Dutch
Activity: Painter

Born in Leeuwarden de Vries studied painting in Amsterdam before going to Antwerp and Malines where he became famous as painter of architectural scenes.

He notably painted decors for the triumphant visit of Emperor Charles V in Antwerp and went to Frankfurt and in Brunswick where he remained until 1596.

De Vries also visited Hamburg, Prague and Leipzig where he decorated the Stock Exchange building there.

This artist was a well-known theoritician on architectural matters while his paintings showed the influence of the Italian school though he expressed above all a Flemish temperament.
