Born in The Hague in 1546 de Vries reportedly studied sculpture with Giambologna in Florence and worked for the Duke of Savoy in 1588 and then for Emperor Rudolph II in Prague.
De Vries, who was also appointed sculptor to the court of Hungary in 1601, was a talented chiseller who knew well how to cast high quality bronze pieces. His best works were Mercury abducting Psyche (1593) now in the Louvre Museum, Samson and the Philistine (1612) in the National Gallery of Edimburgh.
Like Giambologna de Vries designed many monumental fountains, notably in Augsburg. He also produced in Prague the statues of the Wallenstein gardens.
De Vries was one of the main representatives of the Manierist movement and surely one of the best sculptors of the 16th and beginning of the 17th Century.
