SOTHEBY'S DECEMBER 9, 2009 SALE OF OLD MASTERS
Sotheby's
achieved a turnover of just over 15 million pounds for its sale of Old
masters held in London on December 9, 2009.
A self-portrait
by Flemish artist Anton Van Dyck (1599-1641) sold for 8,329,250 GBP (buyer's
premium included) against a high estimate of 3 million. The property of the
Earl of Jersey's Trust, this oil on canvas measuring 59,7 x 47,3 cm was held in
an important 17th Century Italianate Mannerist style English frame.
CHRISTIE'S DEC 8 SALE OF OLD MASTERS AND 19TH CENTURY ART The
auction of Old Masters and 19th
Century Art at Christie's on 8 December 2009 realised £68,380,250 /
$112,417,131 / €75,491,796 – the highest ever total for an auction of Old
Masters. The sale was 65% sold by lot and 95% sold by value. Buyers (by lot)
were 46% Europe, 43% Americas and 11% Asia and Middle East. Link

November 3rd 2009 yielded 65,674,000 dollars/£46,910,000/€45,292,414
with works by Degas, Rodin and Monet reaching high prices. Link
DEATH OF NANCY SPERO American artist Nancy
Spero, who died in Manhattan at the age of 83, was a woman of immense
talent and courage who produced ambiguous works through a complex
symbolic language drawn from Greek, Egyptian, Indian, and pagan
mythologies, according to Hans-Ulrich Obrist in an e-flux article
published on October 30th 2009.

EL LISSITZKY AT THE VAN ABBEMUSEUM
In September 2009 the Van Abbemuseum launches the
three-year Lissitzky+ project, in which the museum will be casting new
light on its renowned Lissitzky collection. This takes the form of a triptych
of exhibitions, each exploring a particular theme, continuing through 2012.
