Born in Metz, a French town that remained under German rule between 1871 and 1918, Lou Albert-Lasard studied art in Munich and then in Paris in 1912 with Fernand Leger. She befriended Alex von Jawlensky and painters of the Blaue Reiter movement with whom she exhibited her works in 1917. Though she married 50-year-old chemist Eugene Albert in 1911, she fell in love in 1914 with the poet Rainer Maria Rilke, and both went on to live in Vienna, where she met Kokoschka. After staying in Switzerland during the First World War, she went to Berlin in 1919, where she became close to the painters of the Novembergruppe. She settled in Paris in 1928 and met several painters and writers, such as Chagall, Kisling, Jean Cocteau and Paul Valery. At the outbreak of the Second World War she was detained in Gurs as an alien and managed to escape arrest when the Germans occupied France. After 1945, her studio became a meeting point for many artists and intellectuals.

Alcalay frequented the Academy in Sofia between 1944 and 1948 before he immigrated to Israel, where he taught painting at the Bat-Yam Institute of Art and at an art school in Ramat-Gan. He had several one-man and group shows in Israel.
