Harburger, Francis
Birth - Death : 1905-?
Nationality : French
Born in Oran, Algeria, Harburger studied painting with Ferrando there and then attended in 1921 the School of Decorative Arts in Paris and the School of Beaux-Arts two years later. He pursued his studies in Spain in 1928 before opening his own studio in the French capital. He started to exhibit his works at the Salon des Independants from 1926 and took part in several exhibitions from 1931. Harburger sought refuge in Algeria at the outbreak of the Second World War after losing his son in 1942. He returned in 1945 to Paris, where he found his studio destroyed. He then produced neo-Cubist works from 1952 and published in 1963 a treaty on Naturalism titled “Language of Painting”. Harburger headed the French Association of Jewish painters and sculptors.

Harris, Louis

Nationality : American
Harris studied at the Art Students League under the guidance of Max Weber before meeting Mark Rothko with whom he shared a flat in New York. Harris had one-man shows in 1933 and 1935 and then formed the “Group of Ten” with Rothko, Bolotowsky and Adolph Gottlieb. He painted female nudes, landscapes and portraits in a realistic style and took part in an exhibition at the Jewish Museum, New York, in 1950.

Hatarsi, Nechama

Nationality : Israeli
Hatarsi studied painting in California between 1969 and 1971 and at the Avni Institute in Tel Aviv between 1974 and 1976. She has taken part in many exhibitions in Israel and abroad.
Hatvany, Ferenc

Nationality : Hungarian
Hatvany studied painting in Paris at the Academie Julian with Jean-Paul Laurens and exhibited at the Salon des Tuileries there. He also worked in Berlin and in London.
Hayden, Henri Henryk
Birth - Death : 1883-1970
Nationality : Polish then French
Hayden studied painting in Warsaw from 1902 and settled in Paris in 1907. A year later he was in Brittany, where he befriended the Polish painter Wladyslaw Slewinski who had been a close acquaintance of Gauguin. Influenced by Cezanne, Hayden swerved progressively to Cubism before signing a contract with Léonce Rosenberg. In 1915, he was already an important artist of the Cubist movement led by Picasso, Braque and Juan Gris. Hayden had a passion for music and worked closely with the composer Eric Satie for whom he illustrated his programs. He moved to a more conventional style of painting after 1925 and during the war many of his works, and his early paintings, disappeared from his studio while he had sought refuge in southern France. Hayden went back to figurative painting during the early 1950s.
Heartfield, John, Herzfeld, Helmut called Heartfield
Birth - Death : 1891-1968
Nationality : German
Heartfield studied art in Munich between 1907 and 1911 and then in Berlin from 1912 until 1914. He befriended George Grosz in 1916 and took part in the activities of the Dada group of Berlin with his brother Wieland Herzfeld, Raoul Haussmann, Hannah Hoch and Johannes Baader. Heartfield became famous with Dadaist photomontages and collages. Fleeing the Nazi regime, he sought refuge in 1933 in Prague and then went in 1938 to London where he stayed until 1948. Heartfield settled in East Germany in 1949.
Hebroni, Joseph
Birth - Death : 1888-1963
Nationality : Israeli
Painter and Sculptor. Born in Palestine Hebroni studied art in 1906 at the Alliance Israelite Francaise and the Bezalel Academy in Jerusalem. The wealthy Benyehuda family enabled him to pursue his studies in Berlin, where he met Liebermann and Albert Einstein. The rise of Nazism forced him to seek refuge in France, where he worked under the influence of Maillol but faced difficult years. Hebroni returned with his wife to Germany after the Second World War and worked there until his death in Flensburg. According to his wish he was buried in the Jewish cemetery in Hamburg.

Heilbuth, Ferdinand

Nationality : German then French
Painter. Born in Hamburg, Heilbuth was the son of a rabbi. Heilbuth studied art in Dusseldorf, Rome and Paris, where he settled. He produced some charming scenes during his career.
Heine, Thomas Theodor
Birth - Death : 1867-1948
Nationality : German
Heine studied with Jansen at the Academy in Dusseldorf and settled in 1889 in Munich, where he worked as an illustrator for several newspapers. He then became one of the founders of the Simplicissimus\" satirical magazine. A merciless critic of German militarism, Heine even dared attack the sacrosanct person of Emperor Wilhelm II. The virulence of his satire combined with his brilliant draftsman ship earned him a place among the most outstanding cartoonists of his age. He also was an excellent painter of landscapes, portraits and animated compositions and his works were instilled with much symbolism. Heine sought refuge to Sweden when the Nazis rose to power in 1933. "
Heisler, Jindrich
Birth - Death : 1914-1953
Nationality : Czech
Painter. Heisler belonged to the Surrealist group in Prague before seeking refuge in Paris, where he met André Breton. He took part in the International Surrealist Exhibition at the Galerie Maeght in Paris and worked with Toyen and Styrsky. Also a poet, Heisler illustrated his own writings and produced collages, photomontages and typographic compositions during his career.
Hejman, Gerson
Birth - Death : Active during the second half of the 19th Century
Nationality : Polish
Hejman studied painting at the school of Fine Arts in Warsaw between 1844 and 1850. It is not known whether he pursued a career as a painter.
Heller, Odon

Nationality : Hungarian
Painter.
Helman, Robert
Birth - Death : 1910-1990
Nationality : Rumanian then French
Painter. Helman settled in Paris in 1927 and sought refuge in Spain during World War Two. One of his works is on permanent display at the Tel Aviv Museum.

Hernadi, Herzl Kornel
Birth - Death : 1858-1910
Nationality : Hungarian
Hernadi studied painting with Liezen-Mayer in Munich and in Paris, where he settled, and worked under the guidance of Flameng, Roll and Robert-Fleury. He exhibited in various Parisian salons from 1888 as well as in Munich, Berlin and Vienna.
Herstein Adolf Edward

Nationality : Polish
He worked as a painter and printmaker in Berlin.
