Born in Barrasstechky, Ukraine, Ferstadt came to America with his family at ten. He studied painting at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1918 and won a scholarship to the Art Students League in 1923 before enrolling at the Educational Alliance Art School. Making his living as a cartoonist for the “New York Evening Graphic”, he had his first one-man show at the Society of Advancement of Judaism in New York in 1928 and exhibited at the Brooklyn Museum in 1932. Three years later, Ferstadt joined the Mexican mural painter David Alfaro Siqueiros and others in organizing the Siqueiros Experimental Workshop in New York. In his murals he combined abstraction with classical realism and in 1939 created a major work, showing workers for the subway entrance to the New York World's Fair.
