Chternberg or Shterenberg, David Birth - Death : 1881-1948 Nationality : Russian
Chternberg studied at the School of Beaux-Arts and in various private institutions in Paris between 1907 and 1917. He exhibited at the Salon des Independants there in 1912, 1914 and 1917, as well as at the Salon de Printemps in 1912 and 1913. Back in Russia Chternberg became an influential member of the Vkhutemas popular studios from 1920 to 1930 and headed several Russian exhibitions held abroad during the 1920s. Holding a post of Art Commissary, he also participated actively in Jewish arts organizations and exhibitions. Chternberg showed paintings and stage designs with Chagall and Altman and exhibited his works in Berlin in 1922, as well as the Venice Biennale between 1924 and 1932. He founded OST in 1925 but was pushed out in 1931 by a group who condemned his work as bourgeois. Although his influence waned, Chternberg remained active as an illustrator and poster designer through the Second World War.

Paul Citroen studied painting in Berlin but gave up his activities in 1914 to run a library before becoming an art dealer in 1917 in Holland. Back in Berlin in 1918, he joined the Dada group and produced photomontages and collages showing an accumulation of city views and frontages creating an impression of chaos. A close friend of Erwin Blumenfeld and George Grosz, he then worked for the Almanach Dada in 1920 and resumed his career as a painter two years later. At that time Citroen frequented the Bauhaus in Weimar until 1925 and founded in 1927 a new art school in Amsterdam, where he applied the principles of the Bauhaus. He also taught painting and drawing from 1935 in the hague, where he remained until his death.
