Abraham détruisit des statues de dieux païens que les artistes juifs ne
vinrent à aborder la représentation humaine en sculpture qu'à la fin
du XIXe siècle lorsque leurs coreligionnaires profitèrent du mouvement
d'émancipation en Europe Centrale et de l'Est. De nombreux
artistes juifs se sont consacrés à la sculpture durant le XIXe et XXe
siècle et certains d'entre eux sont devenus très célèbres comme Chana
Orlov, Jacques Lipchitz, Elie Nadelman ou Jacob Epstein.

Ben-Zion, Ben Zion Weinman Birth - Death : Ben-Zion settled in the U.S in 1920 and became an American citizen in 1936. This self-taught artist stopped writing in Hebrew with the rise of Nazism feeling that the language and his work was a scream that no one heard. Ben-Zion was a close friend of Mark Rothko with whom he founded the group “The Ten” in 1935 in New York. He exhaled his love for the Bible and biblical themes and also worked as a sculptor. The Jewish Museum in New York held two exhibitions of his works in 1948 and 1952 as well as a retrospective in 1956. Nationality : Ukrainian then American 1897-?
