Herwarth Walden founded the art magazine “Der Sturm” and an art gallery, which organized an annual Salon from 1912, the year he showed the works of painters attached to the Blaue Reiter movement. Married to the woman-writer Else Lasker-Schuler between 1901 and 1911 he worked as an amateur painter.

Walkowitz, Abraham
Birth - Death : 1880-1965
Nationality : American
Born in Siberia, Walkowitz came with his family to the U.S at a young age. After studying painting at the National Academy of Design in New York and at the Academie Julian in Paris between 1905 and 1907, he first worked under the influence of Edvard Munch and became one of the first painters of the American urban landscape but some months after his return in the U.S he concentrated mainly on drawing. He took part in the Armory Show exhibition in 1913 after he had his first solo show in 1908. Considered as one of the pioneers of Modernism in the U.S Walkowitz produced thousands of drawings based on Cubist and Futurist concepts but was forced to give up his activity after becoming blind in 1930. A retrospective of his works was held at the Jewish Museum in New York in 1949.

Born in Sao Paulo she immigrated in 1967 with her parents to Israel, where she later enrolled at the Shenkar College of Design. She then studied at the Tel Aviv School of the Arts and concentrated on painting producing abstract works. She perfected her studies at the California Institute of the Arts and turned herself to photography, video art and installation. She produced multi-media installations involving audio, video texts and objects. She exhibited at the Whitney Open Studios and called her showing “Captured”. She also showed her works in 1997 at the Bronx Museum and began to examine the language of painting and its boundaries through a new perspective in creating a synthesis of narrative elements in her works.

Born in Leipzig, Berthe Wehnert-Beckman was recognised as the first Jewish woman who pursued photography as a life-long passion. She was probably the first woman photographer of her time. She studied with a Czech daguerreotypist and then perfected her skills by producing portraits as an itinerant artist. After being turned down by the city of Leipzig from opening her own studio, Wehnert-Beckman managed to get around protection laws in having her husband, Edward Wehnert 1811-1841
