Olej, Mieczyslaw

Olej studied under Lovis Corinth in Berlin and at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere in Paris. A member of the “Start” group, he painted landscapes and portraits. Olej settled in the U.S at the end of World War Two.
Oppenheim, Meret
Birth - Death : 1913-1985
Nationality : German
Born in Berlin, Meret Oppenheim came in 1932 to Paris, where she studied painting at the famous Grande Chaumiere Academy. She befriended Jan Arp and Alberto Giacometti and became one of Man Ray's models. Quite provocative, she led a somewhat dissipated life in Paris but managed to take part in many exhibitions there and also in New York, where she caused some sensation during the Fantastic Art, Dada and Surrealism Show and in Copenhagen before World War Two. After seeking refuge in Switzerland during the war, meret Oppenheim came back to the French capital and exhibited her works several times until her death. Her fur dinner set shown in 1936 in New York, with cup, saucer and spoon covered with fur became a symbol of Surrealism and was acquired by the Museum of Modern Art. After 1937, Meret OppenHeim had several nervous breakdowns that affected her activity during at least 17 years. During the 1959 International Surrealist Exhibition, she again made sensation with “The Feast”, a dinner served by a naked woman wearing a gold mask.

Josef Oppenheimer studied painting in Munich and worked in Berlin before he was forced to flee to London when the Nazis took power in 1933. He also achieved considerable reputation as a portrait painter in the U.S.

Orlik, Emil

Nationality : Czech
Orlik studied painting in Munich before visiting England between 1898 and 1900, Japan, between 1900 and 1901 and Vienna in 1903. He also traveled to China, Korea, Egypt, Siberia and the U.S. Orlik, who befriended Gustav Klimt and took part in the exhibitions of the Vienna Secession group taught art in Berlin from 1905 until 1932. Orlik, who painted a portrait of the composer Gustav Mahler, was also an outstanding illustrator of fine books and designed a number of medals executed by the Berlin Mint.

Orszag studied at the Academy in Budapest and then produced Surrealist and abstract paintings showing her works with the Hungarian avant-garde group. She exhibited in Israel in 1966, in 1968 in Rome, in 1970 in Paris and in 1974 in Budapest.
