Da Costa was the daughter of a Jewish physician named Fernandino Mendez da Costa established in London. She worked as a miniature painter after studying with Bernard Lens between 1712 and 1730. Some miniature portraits representing members of Da Costa's family are now in the Jewish Museum in London.

Delaunay-Terk, Sonia nee Sarah Stern

Delaunay-Terk's Jewish parents died when she was only five-year-old. Raised by Henri Terk, her maternal uncle, she studied painting in Karlsruhe before coming in 1906 to Paris, where she was much impressed by Van Gogh and Gauguin as well as Fauvism. Delaunay-Terk first married Wilhelm Uhde, a gallery owner, and then met Robert Delaunay in 1907. Sharing his ideas regarding Cubism and Abstract painting, she worked with him and became his wife in 1910. Sonia Delaunay exhibited her works in Berlin in 1913 and worked in Spain between 1915 and 1920. After the death of Robert Delaunay, she sought refuge in southern France during World War Two and came back to Paris in 1945. Two years later Sonia Delaunay took part in the setting up of the Salon des Realites Nouvelles and then exhibited her works in many countries.
