Paris-Drouot, Etude Briest. This rare monotype was produced in 1902, during Gauguin's second trip to Tahiti. It belonged to Gustave Fayet, a collector of post-impressionist works, who had received it directly from Gauguin. The artist sent him this work with a note explaining how he had produced it. He notably said that he had applied ink with a roll on a leaf of paper and put another sheet of paper over it on which he had made the drawing, thus obtaining a unique print. This work was at the centre of an intense bidding battle and the final price seemed quite excessive since a good drawing by Gauguin would have fetched much less.
