Sotheby's New York. This work was only attributed to David, one of the most important and famous artists in the Flanders. He left his native Holland and settled in Bruges circa 1484. He rapidly became the city's leading artist after the death of Memling in 1494. The painting sold by Sotheby's, estimated between US $ 80,000 and 120,000 would appear to date to David's late period. What prompted the bidding to reach such height was the fact that theKunsthistorisches Museum of Vienna conserves another treatment by David of the same subject, of about the same size and from about the same period.
