Cretan icon signed lower centre by Emmanuel Lamprados, tempera painting on Alep wood pine panel, Crete, beginning of the 17th Century

Etude Delorme, Drouot-Paris. A world record for a Greek icon sold to a Greek woman buyer bidding on the phone from New York. This price doubled the previous record registered in London for a Nativity in 1995. This icon, signed by one of the most famous Cretan masters, came from the collection of Hélène Stathatos, a rich woman collector of the turn of this Century who donated many Orthodox pieces to several Greek museums. This piece had been the object of many international exhibitions and was rare enough to seduce specialists. After the fall of Constantinople in 1453, Crete harboured many artists who belonged to the Catholic orthodox religion and became a much blossoming centre for the production of religious icons. At the start of the 17th Century most Cretan artists sought refuge in Venice. Emmanuel Lamprados (1593-1647), who was among them, worked according ancient traditions though he showed much compassion and tenderness in this work. A similar piece belongs to the Byzantine museum of Athens.
