19 th Century paintings Art Market Review April 2007

The April 19th century European Art sales in New York achieved more than $32 million. Buyers were active in all ranges of the nineteenth century art market; Christie's excelled in the $20,000-50,000 range and the average lot value at Sotheby's was $105,000. This season was marked by unprecedented bidding by American private collectors and a depth of quality across all collecting sub-categories. (All prices include buyer's premium.)
Sotheby's sale last Wednesday was highlighted by record-breaking prices for the great 19th century painter Rosa Bonheur. The previous record for Bonheur - the sale of a watercolor version of The Horse Fair at Sotheby's in 1990 ($231,000) - was eclipsed three times; an ambitious oil painting entitled The Spanish Muleteers Crossing the Pyrenees ($252,000), the return of the previous record-holder The Horse Fair ($480,000 with premium) and a large-scale pastel of a stag in the moonlight entitled King of the Forest ($492,000).
Other strong prices included Edmund Blair Leighton's iconic God Speed ($1,048,000 including premium) and Eugen von Blaas's impressive Awaiting the Return ($552,000).
The Barbizon School was well-represented by Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot's Le Sentier au Printemps ($540,000). Orientalist art also had a strong showing this April, with top prices paid for high quality works. Tetar van Elven's A View of Jerusalem brought $432,000 against a pre-sale estimate of $60,000-80,000, while Rudolf Ernst's Entering the Palace Garden achieved $552,000, establishing a new world record for the artist. The market for marine paintings continues to be strong, with Montague Dawson's A Clipper Ship in a Moonlit Sea selling for $420,000.
