Russian Art Market Continues to Thrive

The April 2007 Russian Art sales in New York were invariably successful, exceeding expectations and confirming that the market has maintained its recent momentum. Whereas prices at lower and middle levels have seemed to stabilize, prices for top end masterpieces have continued to rise, suggesting that quality is worth its weight in gold in the Russian market. Furthermore, these sales introduced new buyers to the field-wealthy Ukrainian collectors have commandingly expressed their interest in Russian Art, competing with Russians and often outbidding them for top lots of the season.
Sotheby's New York achieved the second highest price paid for a Russian painting at auction, $4,296,000 for Mikhail Nesterov's Vision of Saint Sergius, When a Child, and directed the sale of a highly important and rare Fabergé gold and enamel miniature chair ($2,280,000), which contributed to an overall sale total of $50,966,260 (515 lots). This year's sale, with 30% fewer lots, came just short of last year's total of $54,635,340 (769 lots). Meanwhile, Christie's New York amassed a total of $19,265,160 (336 lots), including the $3,624,000 recorded for Vasilii Vereshchagin's Solomon's Wall (a record for the artist), as well the $1,384,000 paid for a rare Fabergé carnelian gnome mounted as a scent flask.
