Christie's Post-War and Contemporary Art Sales in 2017 achieved a combined annual total of €96,553,150 the highest realized in France to date with the December Evening and Day auctions totalling €21,447,000 .
This season was led by Jean-Paul Riopelle's monumental 1953 paintingUntitled, which saw spirited bidding in the saleroom and sold for €4,882,500, more than double the high estimate of €2,000,000, and established a new world record at auction for the artist.
Further records were achieved for Friendensreich Hundertwasser's Ville vue d'au-delà du soleil (€523,500 ) and Pierrette Bloch's Sans titre (€12,500). Additional highlights include Sanyu's early pink, black and white Still life with fruits, which attracted 20 bidders and sold for €4,207,500 more than four times its estimate of €900,000.
The sales of two celebrated international collections were also concluded in Paris: The Collection of Nancy Lee and Perry R. Bass whose acquisitions represented the best in Impressionist, Modern and Post-War art (Totalling: €42,680,285); and Beyond Boundaries, a cross-category selection that spanned Impressionist and Modern Art, Post-War and Contemporary Art, Magnificent Jewels, African Art and Design (Totalling: €139,779,634). The outstanding totals for the December season follow the success of our October FIAC auctions, which underlined continued growth with a 110% increase on the equivalent sales from 2016. Christie's saw triumphant results for the Prat Collection which was highlighted by Jean-Michel Basquiat's Jim Crow (€15,007,500) achieving the highest price for a painting sold in France in 2017.
