The auction was marked by a record for pioneer of ‘light art' Chris Levine with his strikingly modern portrait of Queen Elizabeth II tripling its low pre-sale estimate to sell for £187,500 .Works by L.S. Lowry, Henry Moore, Elisabeth Frink and Barbara Hepworth achieved strong results while a number of prints by David Hockney sold for a combined £156,500.
Meanwhile, an Athlete Wrestling a Python dated 1877 by Frederic, Lord Leighton, sold at Bonhams for £106,250 against an estimate of £50,000-80,000 during a sale which totaled £1,443,750 whilea conical porcelain bowl by Dame Lucie Rie fetched an impressive £106,250 against an estimate of £20,000-30,000.
A pair of George III carved mahogany open armchairs sold for 6 times their estimate, for a total of £60,000 against an estimate of £8,000-12,000 and a hand-built burnished and carbonized terracotta vessel by Magdalene Odundo went for 4 times its estimate of £10,000-15,000 to achieve a world record of £42,500.
