Wachenhauser, Arie

Painter. After settling in Palestine in 1938, Wachenhauser studied under Aharon Avni in Tel Aviv until 1951. He had several one-man shows from 1941 in Israel, the U.S, Australia and The Netherlands.
Wachtel, Bedrich

Nationalité : Czech
Bedrich Wachtel lived in Prague before the Second World War. Detained with his family in the ghetto of Theresienstadt he produced drawings and paintings there. In 1944, he was sent to Auschwitz and then to Buchenwald until the end of the war. Bedrich Wachtel later immigrated to Australia.
Wachtel, Wilhelm
Naissance - mort : Wilhelm Wachtel was born in Lwow and worked in Vienna, in Munich and in France, where he came around 1910. He moved to New York in 1942 but died shortly after his arrival there. Wilhelm Wachtel produced some Judaic portraits including that of Zionist leader Zeew Zabotynski.

Walden, Herwarth

Herwarth Walden founded the art magazine “Der Sturm” and an art gallery, which organized an annual Salon from 1912, the year he showed the works of painters attached to the Blaue Reiter movement. Married to the woman-writer Else Lasker-Schuler between 1901 and 1911 he worked as an amateur painter.

Walkowitz, Abraham
Naissance - mort : 1880-1965
Nationalité : American
Born in Siberia, Walkowitz came with his family to the U.S at a young age. After studying painting at the National Academy of Design in New York and at the Academie Julian in Paris between 1905 and 1907, he first worked under the influence of Edvard Munch and became one of the first painters of the American urban landscape but some months after his return in the U.S he concentrated mainly on drawing. He took part in the Armory Show exhibition in 1913 after he had his first solo show in 1908. Considered as one of the pioneers of Modernism in the U.S Walkowitz produced thousands of drawings based on Cubist and Futurist concepts but was forced to give up his activity after becoming blind in 1930. A retrospective of his works was held at the Jewish Museum in New York in 1949.
